GATE 2022 Result: How to Calculate GATE Score?

Every candidate who has attempted GATE has this question in mind how to calculate the GATE scores? You need to calculate the scores based on their exam session to estimate the probable rank. For the GATE paper that is conducted in a single session, actual marks gained by the candidate can be used to calculate GATE scores.

For the GATE paper that is conducted in multiple sessions, normalized marks obtained by the candidate will be used to calculate the GATE scores. Read more to know about the normalization procedure and GATE score calculation.

1. Difference between GATE Marks, Rank, and Scores

Candidates often get confused between the GATE marks and score and end up complicating the result. Simply put, GATE marks will be calculated out of 100, while the GATE score is secured out of 1000 by a candidate. After evaluation, the actual marks will be considered to calculate the GATE score.

GATE rank allows you to get admission to the top universities. A rank below 200 gets you the advantage of choosing MTech at IIT while a rank between 350 - 800 will get you to NITs. Candidates can check the table below to check the ranks.

3. Actual GATE Marks vs Normalized GATE Marks

The GATE marks, i.e., the actual marks, are calculated out of 100 for the total number of 65 questions. The question types include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Numerical Answer Type Questions (NAT), and Multiple Select Questions (MSQ). For multiple-choice questions, 1/3 and 2/3 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer. There will be no negative marking for MSQ & NAT questions.

The GATE normalization is done based on the assumption that in all multiple session GATE exams, the capabilities of candidates are the same for all sessions. Candidates attempting the multi-session are large, and the procedure made to allocate the session is random. So, to be equally fair, the raw marks or actual marks obtained are converted to normalized marks.

4. Calculation of GATE Normalized Score

The conducting authorities use the candidates' actual marks to convert them into the GATE score. Since some like CS, CE, EC, EE, and ME are conducted in multiple sessions, a normalization formula is applied to calculate the scores by taking the difficulty of the question paper into account.

The formula used to calculate the GATE score normalization of the candidate j in session (i)

MÌ‚ij=(MÌ…t^g-Mq^g)/(MÌ…ti-Miq) (Mij-Mâ…ˆq)+Mq^g

5. Calculation of GATE Score

The GATE score is calculated out of 1000. Let's see the formula to calculate the GATE score

 GATE Score = Sq + (St – Sq) (M-Mq)/(Mt-Mq)

Where

  • GATE Score Formula
  • M: is the marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers and normalized marks for multi-session papers)
  • Mq: is the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper
  • M Ì…t: is the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions)
  • Sq: 350, is a score assigned to Mq
  • St: 900, is a score assigned to M Ì…t

Concluding Thoughts

We believe that you have gained some insights about GATE to calculate the scores. Through all these different procedures and formulas, you can easily get the back-end process that the conducting authorities use to estimate the candidates' GATE score.
